Australia defeated England by 275 runs in the 2nd Ashes Test in Adelaide on Monday to lead 2-0 in a five-match series. Starting the day with 82 out of 4 in an unexpected 468 chase, England pulled the trigger in the final round of the day.
Chris Woakes (44 off 97) and Jos Buttler (26 off 207) have given England hope of survival. However, Jhye Richardson (5/42) threw Australia to victory, claiming the scalps of both Woakes and Buttler.
Two Woakes-Buttler players lifted England from 105th to 6th to 166 while Richardson ended Woakes' opposition. The England all-rounder was thrown into the gate with a full cross-stitch ball - a new subtle ball. Nathan Lyon then looked very good on Ollie Robinson (8) as the seamstress pulled one out and slipped.
England went to Tea at 180 to 8. However, with Buttler still in the crease, they were optimistic. The wicketkeeper had a strange Test behind the stumps, catching the batsmen and knocking them down. No wonder his innings ended in a strange way again. After taking the crease for 258 minutes, Buttler stepped in trying to direct one Richardson. In a way, his dismissal by wicket sums up his unexpected wealth in the Test.
It seemed that the end would come soon. However, Buttler and Woakes set up a much-needed resistance. While Woakes hit a few well-timed bounds, Buttler had a defensive part. The two were undefeated as England went to dinner on Day 5, still ranked 142 out of 6.
The Buttler-Woakes duo continued to frustrate Australia with their second session. Richardson, however, ensured the Aussies had a final laugh.
Best off luck Richardson 3rd test.
