Brathwaite made his first class game at just 16 years old and impressed, hitting 73 while opening the batting Barbados. He was called up to the West Indies squad for the Test series against Bangladesh in 2009, when senior players went on strike, and was awarded a contract by the West Indies Cricket Board. A top scorer, imitating his style of play with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Brathwaite won a place in the West Indies Under 19 team at the 2010 World Cup in New Zealand. He was the best runner in the West Indies and was in second place with 335 and fifty runs. He played for a big team in 2011, and started playing for Pakistan in the home Test series.
