Rohit Sharma has been named as India’s new ODI captain, Beginning of a new era for India men’s limited-over.
(BCCI) on Wednesday announced that Rohit Sharma would take over from Virat Kohli as captain of India's ODI team again. Rohit was appointed T20I captain after Kohli decided to resign following India's T20 World Cup campaign.
"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has also decided to call Mr. Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI and T20I teams going forward," the BCCI said in a statement after announcing the Indian team to play in South Africa. Is
Notably, Virat Kohli had stated that he would continue to lead India in the ODIs and Tests after resigning as T20I captain following the T20 World Cup in the UAE.
The nominees, however, seem to have called for Rohit's appointment as ODI captain, commemorating the 2023 World Cup in India.
Rohit's nomination for ODI captain officially ends Kohli's career as a white captain, one of which he fully took over in January 2017. Although his record is highly literate - of the 60 captains who will lead in 50 or more ODIs for men, only three have a record better to win - India has failed to win the ICC tournament under him. They finished second in the 2017 Champions Trophy and lost in the semi-finals of the World Cup with 50 overs in 2019. At Kohli's only World Cup as captain, last month in the UAE, India crashed behind the group stage following a draw. -Return after losses in Pakistan and New Zealand.
When announcing his resignation from T20I, Kohli, however, expressed his desire to continue as ODI captain, as well as to become a Test captain. In a statement, he said, "... I feel I need to give myself space to fully prepare to lead the Indian team to Test and ODI Cricket." It will not be so now, although he will continue to be captain in a long format.
Meanwhile, Rahan's downfall marks her downfall. It was earlier this year that he led India to a historic Test series victory in Australia in the absence of Kohli. Rahane was in the midst of India’s transformation in Melbourne, where his century helped India equalize after they were knocked out by 36 in the first game of the series in Adelaide.
Since that century, however, Rahan's lack of a sense of urgency has necessitated an examination. He now makes an average of 24.39 in his last 16 Tests, his average performance is less than 40. After scoring 35 and 4 points in the first Test against New Zealand in Kanpur, Rahane missed the second Test in Mumbai due to injury.
With the South African tour postponed for a week following a period of uncertainty following the discovery of the new Covid-19 Omicron in southern Africa, the Indian squad is now expected to meet in Mumbai before its departure on December 12. They will play three Tests and several ODIs. on the go, and the T20Is, which were part of the itinerary, which were expected to be played later.
Best of luck Rohit Sharma.
